We're partnering with Mapzen

Greetings, wayfinders! We’ve got an exciting announcement—we’re partnering with Mapzen, the open-source mapping lab, for this challenge. Mapzen has a great library of mapping and geodata tools you can incorporate into your app. It’s not required, but we think it’s pretty cool!

Here are a few ways to boost your app with Mapzen:

  • Pelias is a modular, open-source, and very efficient geocoder powered by ElasticSearch.
  • Tangram is a flexible mapping engine, designed for real-time rendering of 2D and 3D maps.
  • Metro Extracts are city-sized portions of the OpenStreetMap database, served up weekly.
  • Mapzen provides a free & open Vector

Not quite sure how to approach your wayfinding app? Not entirely sure what wayfinding is? Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

What is wayfinding?

Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space.

Wayfinding is particularly important in complex built environments such as urban centers, healthcare and educational campuses, and transportation facilities. As architectural environments become more complicated, people need visual cues such as maps, directions, and symbols to help guide them to their destinations. In these often high-stress environments, effective wayfinding systems contribute to a sense of…

Making a great submission video

We know you’re focused on coding right now, but don’t forget about your submission video. It’s often the first thing that judges and voters review.

A good video tells the story behind your submission, providing a clear and concise explanation of what your solution is and does. Here are some tips and a list of screencasting tools:

  • Establish your elevator pitch. In the first few seconds of your video, explain why your solution is awesome. You can get into the details of how it works later on in the video, but treat the opening seconds of your video as…
